Milford Sound Overnight Cruise: Photography, Fjord Landscapes, and Wildlife
Milford Sound Overnight Cruise: Photography, Fjord Landscapes, and Wildlife
I still remember the smell of the rainforest as we sailed into Milford Sound – it was like nothing I’d ever experienced before. The sound of waterfalls and the sight of mist-shrouded mountains rising up from the water made me feel tiny in the best possible way.
The Journey Begins
We set off from Te Anau at 9 am, the sun already high in the sky. Our boat, the Milford Wanderer, was small enough to feel intimate, but big enough to have a decent kitchen and a crew that seemed to know what they were doing. I was excited to see what the next 24 hours would bring.
As we sailed out of the harbour, I chatted to one of the crew members, a guy who’d been working on the sound for years. He told me that the best time for photography was early morning and late evening, when the light was soft and golden. He also warned me that the weather could change in an instant, so I should be prepared for anything.
First Impressions
The first thing that struck me about Milford Sound was its scale. The mountains towered above us, their peaks lost in the mist. The water was a deep, rich blue, and the sound of the waterfalls was almost deafening. I felt like I was in a different world, one that was both beautiful and intimidating.
I spent the first few hours just taking it all in, trying to process the sheer grandeur of the place. I took a few photos, but I was more interested in just looking, in trying to absorb as much as I could.
Wildlife and Photography
As the day went on, we started to see more wildlife – seals, penguins, and even a few dolphins. I was amazed by how close we could get to them, how unafraid they seemed to be of the boat and the people on it.
I took a lot of photos, but I was also careful not to disturb the animals. I didn’t want to be one of those tourists who thinks they’re above the rules, who doesn’t care about the impact they’re having on the environment.
One of the crew members, a woman who was also a photographer, showed me some of her favourite spots to shoot. She told me about the importance of patience, of waiting for the right moment to take the shot. She also showed me some of her photos, which were incredibly beautiful – they really captured the essence of the place.
The Overnight Cruise
We anchored down for the night in a secluded cove, surrounded by mountains and waterfalls. It was incredibly peaceful, the only sounds being the water lapping against the shore and the occasional call of a bird.
I went to bed early, feeling grateful for the experience I was having. I knew that this was something special, something that I would never forget.
The Next Morning
We set off again at 6 am, the sun just starting to rise. The light was golden and soft, perfect for photography. I took a lot of photos, trying to capture the beauty of the place.
As we sailed back out of the sound, I felt a sense of sadness. I didn’t want the experience to end, didn’t want to leave this beautiful place behind. But I also knew that I would never forget it, that it would stay with me for the rest of my life.
Now, back home, I’m still thinking about Milford Sound. I’m still looking at my photos, still trying to process the experience I had. It was truly an unforgettable place, one that I hope to return to someday.
