Tasmania: Freycinet Marine Farm Oysters

freycinetmarinefarm

I’d be lying if I said that my only reason for visiting the Freycinet Peninsula was to climb to the Wineglass Bay Lookout. It was also for the other jewel in my dictionary that I was here: Oysters! And what better place to go for oysters than at the Freycinet Marine Farm?

While not as creamy as some of the Pacific oysters from the US; the fresh, plump, sweet and slightly briny Pacific oysters from the Freycinet Marine Farm certainly did not disappoint.  It was clearly no secret to the tourists that the oysters sold here are of incredible value, judging by the fact they came by the busloads. Still, it wasn’t crowded, as people came here mainly for one objective only: have oysters and have them fresh. And once the oysters ‘aficionados’ have done their deeds, they’re shuttled off to their next destination.

Oysters by the dozens...

Oysters by the dozens…

We didn’t try their famous Oysters Kilpatrick, but instead opted for au naturel, with just a dash of lemon. At just A$18 for a dozen, it was, for want of a better description, a steal.

Freycinet Marine Farm opens daily between 9am and 5pm and is located at: 1784 Coles Bay Rd, Coles Bay TAS 7215
